I have recently bought another S13 for track use, its pretty set up already except has a few issues. One of which is really sloppy engine mounts, I have changed them in my 180 before but I did it when the engine was out.

Is it possible to change the engine mounts without taking the motor out? and if so what stuff to I need to remove to make this work

eg. any wiring, fuel lines, radiator hoses, other hoses, gearbox mount, tailshaft?

You can actually (dodgily) jack up the motor from the bottom.

Whether or not you want to risk it is up to you.

put a block of wood under the sump and use a strong trolley jack under that. the wood will stop you denting the sump or damaging it.

Another option would be to hold the engine from the top with a crane and drop the engine crossmember down.

I have an engine crane, would it be possible to lift the engine with it about 2 inchs without breaking anything? or would it be better to disconnect some stuff.

you have to remove the gearbox crossmember and get some angle happening for that sort of height. Most things on the intake plenum need to come off too (intercooler piping, fuel lines)

yes all you need is an inch to get the mounts to clear the mount bolts i found there is about 3-4 inches without damaging anything

not necessary plus you will put the weight of the gear box on the crane making the engine want to tilt up, you can get around not taking the intake plenum, piping it can be done with it in

the problem with using a crane is the legs are in the way so the easiest option is using a blank of wood and jack to take the weight of the engine while you take the crossmember out the sump was fine

i know because i did the crane method last weekend as i had to do change an oil pump and the jack method on a mates car in Feb much better access

you'll need 1/2 drive extension and 19mm or 17mm socket stuff to take the steering rack mounts off

Its not dodgy if you jack it up with a pice of wood and from the right place, done it on heaps of cars, heaps of times.

sweet, thanks fellas sounds like a plan, I was going to just pull the engine out and change all the hoses just to be sure as I wanted to install my alloy steering column bush as its tight as getting in there, but turns out it already has one...bonus. I'll just jack up the sump then with a block of wood underneath it, is that it or should I remove cooler piping/fuel lines etc
