Hi Guys

Last weekend I was trying install the air/fuel gauge in the 180 (sr20) but couldn’t seem to find the right wire for the O2 Sensor.

From memory there’s a red, black and white wire (coming from the sensor itself). Which is the correct one to use?

I also discovered that the cables for the O2 sensor coming from the wiring harness had been shouldered; I was under the impression that you are not suppose to shoulder the o2 wires?

Please help

P.s I had the gauge installed in my sss before so I know its working.

I am still yet to install mine in my car, but from using the multimeter on the o2 sensor, the white one seems to be the signal wire (the one in the middle on the firewall side of the plug).

Why drive when you can drift?

Yep white wire is it.

You can solder the wires but you just have to make sure it isn't too close to the exhaust or it'll melt the solder. Better to use a crimp connector and a bit of heat shrink to be sure

you can solder it, just do it a LONG way from the turbo/manifold lol

either that or have another O2 sensor mounted in the dump and use that. thats a bit of a stupid thought, unless it was a wideband

Umm I tried the white wire.....maybe my gauge is screwed up then!
I'll give it a go again tonight if I have the time.

there are 2 types of o2 sensors -- zirconia and titania.

the skinny one that comes on older sr20det's are titania, and that sends a different signal that the zirconia (fatter, more common ones). the signal is a resistance variation, rather than a voltage. the a/f gauges only work with the voltage-varying zirc. sensors.

you might have no choice but to plumb in a zirc sensor into the exhaust.

Yea I think I have the titania o2. I know the sensor works but as soon as I wire it up to the o2, the LEDS on the gauge all turn off :S

You can get a universal type single wire sensor from repco for about 80-90 bucks that will do it.

I have installed one to run mine as i wasn't too happy about tapping into the factory one, plus i had used one of the cheapies on a previous car and it worked quite well with the autometer gauge.

Seems like more hustle then its work…. The factory O2 sensor has 3 wires coming outer it. How does the universal one work then?

On the factory sensor you have a power, earth and signal as they are a heated type.

The single wire sensor is not heated so takes a minute or so to heat up with exhaust gas. Not a problem really as you don't really need a sensor to know that the car is running very rich when it's cold
