hi guys,

I've just hooked up all the electrics back into place (everything was basically not hooked up when i bought the car) and now i have a porblem with the brake lights not working.

When i press the brakes during the day - it turns the dash lights and parker lights on so it will look very stupid from the outside cuz everytime i brake the parkers flash sorta thing. Where do i look to see where I've maybe connected the socket wrong?

Also where do i find the globes for the brake light on the boot lid? They seem to be of a different kind. Thanks~

Check the wiring at the tail lights, the lights that come on with your parkers/headlights must be wired into the brake light wire.

the fuses in driver side kick panel are crossed
same thing happened to me

fuses? aren't the fuses only for power purposes?

please explain further.....

fuses are part of the circuit so if they are crossed the circuit is crossed which can cause all sorts of shennagians

and do u mean the little LEDs in the wing sorta thing?

depends if someones bastardised the wiring as to how much crap u havta sort thru to sort it out....

check all the fuses with a test light
or take it down to auto elec.. easy job

also check tail light bulbs.. they have to be the right one.

yeah i've checked all the bulbs - they all work and seem to be in order. It's just the brake light on the hatch that is not working - it consists of 2 bulbs, one of them is in and the other one is busted....I haven't seen these kinds of bulbs b4, so wondering where to find em.

and fuses as in the little plastic 10/15/20 amp thingies? You mean the brake light fuse is busted? and is running on the parker light fuse (logical) ??

i dunno man im no auto electrician
i just took mine down to the local workshop and he fixed it up for me
all he did was touch the fuses in the kick panel.. switched them around or something and tested them with the light.. then everything worked perfect

OK guys, rego is coming up and i still CANNOT find the problem...

have taken the whole dash apart and unplugged the sockets from the brake pedal, i replaced all the globes, i traced the wires from the tail-lights and 'trial and error-ed' each one to a different one. Also replaced all the blown fuses in the kick panel and made sure they were the right voltage (in the process i managed to get my power mirrors going )

So where else haven't i checked? The tailights all come on when i press the brakes...........ie. seems like i'm turning my headlights on and off constantly if you were watching from behind, when i'm in actual fact braking!

BTW, this 180 is auto - could it be the wiring crossed at the gearstick where the gear numbers light up? cuz everytime i brake it 'clicks' and also makes these lights go on and off

Hi,

You will need to get a hold of the electrical wiring diagrams for your car!
You will need to check each circuit which is not working properly, at the at time!
Then you will need to forward trace the the wiring from the brake pedal switch with an electric 12V test lamp, until you find the discrepancy with the schematic.
Also back trace the the circuit from your brake lights and find out where they are connected and what cirucit makes them work!
Do your fault finding in two stages, downstream from the fuse box first and then upstream of the fusebox.
To isolate the the problem, (going through one circuit at the time), remove the fuse from the circuit you are testing and check the brake light circuit working back to the tail lights!
Then, with the fuse still out, check the brake light circuit upstream of the fuse! Most likely, there is a wiring stuff up in/or around your fuse box!
