if you are talking about the S13 only models - Non VCT - then the colour is the only difference. but feel free to shoot me down if im wrong :P

but im sure this has been answered several times on this forum

There was an ECU change from the Redtop to the Blacktop... so possibly some wiring differences.

The "black top" came in the s14 and the 180sx but the later ones (made during the same time as s14.

black top has VCT (variable cam timing) and i believe a T28 instead of the red tops T25.

the black top's rocker cover is black, but really it can be seen that there is a lump (semi-circle) sitting at the front of the left hand side of the rocker cover.. this is the VCT unit.

black tops came with more power and better low end torque.. they sound much better also.. (that awesome growl they give when u have an exhaust on)

:)

slight lobe adjustments and ecu updates compared to the redtop.
they came with t25g's no t28, id say there more in common with an s13 red rocker than s14 black covers

also read that nissan outsourced a korean company to make the post 94' 180's chassis when nissan shifted its focus on the s14, while nissan suplied the s13 engine units to the outsource company, but dun take my word as gospel for that.

at the end of the day if u are going to modify the engine then it doesnt really matter what colour the rocker cover is.
alot of s15's in the D1 use s13 motors anyway.

remember that there was a blacktop S13 motor too.

not all blacktop SR20s ARE VCT equipped and have larger turbos

yeah the local importer up here sells the blacktop s13 motor for $200 more than the redtop s13 motor...i wonder how many ppl think they are getting a better motor rather than just one that is slightly newer, sneaky bastards.

Im looking to buy a 180...... preferably with the black rocker, and with the VCT..

Is the VCT anything like the hondas vtec? coz thats variable cam timing aswell isnt it?

You will NOT find a 180sx with a VCT SR20DET... unless its had an engine conversion.
