hey..

i dont really know much about turbo cars and i was just wondering about the costs involved in owning one, well owning a 180sx.. i know insurance is very expensive (i would only b able to afford 3rd party). but i was also wondering about things like; petrol, parts, servicing and stuff like that.

-thanks

Well depending on the car you get, the costs can vary greatly. The turbo on my CA 180 is only worth about $25 :lol:, but as you get better (and newer) they get more costly - S15 T28's for example regularly go for $800 upwards (second hand).

As for servicing - it depends where you take it. Most wont touch the snail, but then again from what I hear a lot of the members service their own cars anyway.

Then comes fuel. CA18's being older engines are naturally a little more hydrocarbon-hungy. With the stock exhaust and airbox you could be getting as little as 350km to a tank (55L). With my auto :oops: I was getting ~300 for a while - until I turned hold mode off.. but that's beside the point.

SR20's however will cost you more up front but will get 400+km to a tank (correct me if I'm wrong guys) with stock exhaust and airbox.

As for parts, they can be sourced reasonably cheaply - given the popularity of the silvia :D For example, a complete CA18DET can be picked up fro about $1000 and an SR20DET for about $2000.

The conclusion: Driven sensibly, there's no reason why a turbo 180 or S13 can't be a great, reasonably priced car, easily upgradable and with the added bonus of at least one brilliant site for like-minded individuals to come together and discuss these fine automobiles - and give certain members crap for having auto's :oops:

Driven more agressively, they can be a HELL OF A LOT OF FUN :D Just make sure you do it on the track ;)

As long as you get a car which is in good order and you treat it with respect you wont have to spend lots of $$$$ on repair and maintence.

If you buy a lemon then you woud be in trouble as with any "older" car.

Its very important for you to get the car inspected thoroughly, Sydney Vehicle check do excellent pre purchase inspections.

Heres a thread which would be a interesting read for you:

Also try doing some searching, you can dig up loads of information, just enter the right key words.

a bit of personal experience, my car has cost me an arm and a leg... well actually its dried up all my money and i still need more to get some things sorted out, which really sux

i find running costs to be high ie petrol, around 60-70 a week on petrol
parts well being an import, cost more then say a holden, by quite a bit
but up against other imports its not too bad even pretty good i would say

but thats my personaly experience, im sure others have had trouble free time with there cars... btw mines a 91 sr20det 180, with around 80K on the clock when i bought it round 4 months ago

What sort of petrol are you using dude ? I'm finding it hard to pass 400kms. Are you predicting what it'll be when it's completely dried up or you get 450kms before filling up ? I could push it to 450km but it'll lay dead after.

i use optimax and even with hard driving i can go to newcastle and back on about $30.
Oil changes every 5,000km's, fuel filter every 10,000km's...since i've owned the 180 all i've had to replace was the differential and clutch more due to my driving than anything, also full set of brake pads and new dic's on the front.

1993 180sx SR20DET

caltex vortex gold....they tell me it's 98, but i know it's 95...450km/tank (11.3ltr/100km) regardless of driving style....never paid more than $50 for a tank....

insurance -> expensive
spare parts -> relatively cheap, readily available
aftermarket parts -> relatively cheap, readily available
DIY serviceability -> good
fuel -> cheap
oil -> expensive
spark plugs -> expensive
tyres -> frequently changed
suspension -> relatively hassle free, interchangeable with other nissans
