I love 4ag's and even I think that's obsessive. reminds me of the pics I have of a guy who built a full-sized replica F1 car from matchsticks.

if these guys put some of this wasted energy towards practical applications, the world would likely be a better place.

ours at least can be used for something other than looking at and oohing and ahhing.
they also have monetary value to others if you wished to sell them.

I'm not disparaging the work,as I find it incredible also, but I do have doubts about the usefullness of the endeavour.

It's not like he spent a large sum of money building this thing though.

It looks like a hobby job to me, so the usefulness of the endeavour might be as simple as taking his mind off something else more troublesome. The feeling of accomplishment, most of the time, is enough to warrant the effort of the participant.

You gain appreciation from enjoying your car in a manner you deem useful. Also, your hobby of shooting guns might deem useless to the rest of society (that don't shoot guns), it's a more expensive exercise compared to building a scale model engine, yet similiar in yield for society.

He gains his appreciation from knowing that he's endeavoured to do something arduous and succeeded in his aims.

guys,I'm not saying it's not an amazing effort, and it's pretty obvious that it's something he does purely for his own enjoyment.

my own hobbies are pretty much the same. the only practical application that shooting has is in competitions. I quite enjoy interclub comps, which is the level I'm currently at. eventually I'm going to compete in IPSC,which is an internationally recognised competition. the shooting sports are far larger than most people would realise, and there's a lot more money being spent out there than most modellers would be investing I'd wager.
my entry level STI trojan cost me $1800 for starters.
I go shooting for four reasons. competition, relaxation, social interaction with others who share the same interest, and for the satisfaction that comes from improving a skill through practice.

this guy probably builds models for similar reasons, and that's perfectly fine, noone has a problem with that, myself included.
