Post subject:  Air Box Question

Hey guys, gettin a custom air box done, though i've been told from a few people now that you cannot have a metallic enclosure, so if you do it must be sprayed black... this makes no sense to me and got NO idea why it would be illegal or not allowed...

Anyone know the actual verdict on this? been told by the highway police the reason filters are defectable are due to the fact they are a fire hazard, thus must be enclosed at all times in order to have them in the car, but also are defectable due to the emission stuff, though once enclosed they don't know you're filter is there so don't pick on it... so a bit curious why it matters wether or not the damned box is metal or not ?? :x ??

Help?

I reckon its a good idea to have it black. A chrome one will look aftermarket and a cop could easily assume that there is an aftermarket pod in there

But a pod filter is fine so long as its enclosed..

Perhaps you could give the RTA technical helpdesk a call and ask them.

Fire hazard!?!?

Cops on crack. They should just stick with the emmissions line and be done with it.

If you remove one reason for them to defect you, they will just make up another one.

OK, I just got off the phone with the RTA

Turns out that they can't protect us from the cops. The bloke on the RTA helpline was a mechanic for 45yrs and reckons that the cops are assholes and give no fuck for what the RTA says is legal and what isn't. They will defect you for whatever they like.

He reckons the best idea is to hide any mods that you have done so the cops don't see them.

Basically the bottom line is that ANY modification to the induction or exhaust system is a defect. This could even mean a metal induction pipe, non-factory silicone hoses, even an aftermarket air filter in the standard box.

You are fucked if the cop wants to screw you

The rta guy did say that if you got the cars ENGINEERED with those mods, you may have a chance of getting off a defect.

Just put a large plastic shroud over your whole engine bay sans your battery and tell the cops it doesn't come off.

Most manufactuers do that now anyway to tidy it all up. You can say it's factory!

Some very interesting things =) lol, and yeh.. engineering cert comes later once i get the fmic n shit hooked up... and..purchased.. =) but fixed all defects, just waiting on a call back for my enclosure, then i'm off to get a blue slip and then to the RTA to clear defect...
