Just picked up a Street Commodores from the bargin bin at the local news agent and was just reading through it.

I have heard / read many times people raving about Motul 8100 and Motul 4100. Well they used a device for testing motor oils (Falex Lubricity Tester) to test the leading synthetic motor oils and sadly the Motul did not fair all that well.

The big winners were Royal Purple and Penrite Synthetic 5. After seeing the amount of wear with some of the other oils I think I know what I will be using next service.

they retracted that one i think as it is not the correct method for testing oil. unless it was the follow up.

I think it was busky who mentioned this on SAU?

Ok I just bought the mag and I thought it was interesting... This one is issue 108 March 2006. Why was it retracted?

Cos they finally realised that Falex/Timken are a stupid way to test engine oils beacuse it was never designed for this purpose in the first place (greases and gear oils, YES). You could put some shampoo or bleach into the Falex tester and it would do just as well! Moreover their test methodology was up the creek too.

oh well... couldn't expect much from a bunch of commonwhore owners..would've been an interesting test if they actually did it with half a brain and scientifically as well.

yeah, I thought that since the difference between the best and worst oils in their test was so huge, it couldn't have been that relevent to real world engine life.

You don't need a film strength 400 times stronger than the next best oil if the next best oil still has more than will ever be needed.
Also never mind that engines run at certain temperatures, and are designed to work with even the "worst" of the oils tested. Plenty of engines run for 400,000km+ on cheap mineral oil.

The bottom line is that in the end most people will never notice the difference in the real world, and any decent quality oil will work fine as long as you change it regularly.
I'd rather use an oil that's half the price, but change it twice as much.

So in short you are saying oils are oils as long as you change them often enough :lol:

the 31 gets new oil every time the 180 gets a service;

new oil -> 180

180s' old oil -> 31

The stuff that comes out of the 180 still looks perfect every service, so the only issue I see for the dirty wan is the viscosity (using 10w40)
