The wing is dropped when hitting the top speed to reduce drag. you don't really need rear down force while your going in a straight line or when you already have traction. However if anyone saw the current season airing in england they show james may (AKA Capt. Slow) in the veyron at its max speed of 407.8 Kmph, the rear wing pops up automatically to provide rear downforce on the rear brakes and to work as an air brake like on the wings of a jumbo jet as soon as he touches the brake peddle.

apparently its pritty stable at 407 kmph he only felt a slight wobble when he touched the brakes

Thare's a top speed comparo in the latest Wheels magazine; pitting a few of the top contenders against the Veyron. Needless to say the Veyron creams everything. :lol:

They also point out the fact that it is as pleasurable to drive down to the local shops as it is to drive at 400Kph +. :o
