The same way the writers of Captain Pugwash got away with character names like Seaman Stanes and Master Bates.

I think the sensors back in the early 80's were just a bit slow.

A lot of the stuff floating around the net about Rainbow is actually fake/embellished, but it was still a pretty dodgy show.
