i know this might sound strange but not too long ago i sold my datto and bought a turbo S14 200sx, and i recently had my licence disqualified and now the no turbo for p platers rule now applies to me. My question is whether my motor will run if i remove the turbo? obviously it won't run well performance wise due to it being a low comp motor but If i set the motor up exactly how a DE set up would be but using the turbo afm, injectors and computer, will it work? lol Any help would be greatly appreciated as i'd prefer not to sell the car.

best way for it to be done is to find a sr20de head from a s14 or s15 and swap it over..

if u were to take the turbo off at around 3500rpm when ud start to feel ur boost come in.. it would feel like u had a big crack in ur manifold.. ud just loose that steady increase of power and go slugish as shit...

if u change ur head over, keep ur turbo injectors and the rest, ull at least keep some respectable power... lmaoo be able to get ur car up hills without having to drop 2 gears lmao...

just if u have a 3.5inch zorst pipe and 5 inch tip get rid of it and go 3 inch pip 3.5 tip.. otherwise ur car will sound like 1 of them lebo poosars!!!!

Don't do what the previous poster suggested. The heads on the DE engines are inferior to the DET ones.

DET heads have sodium filled exhaust valves to handle heat better. The DE ones don't (except the Autech ones apparently). The DE heads probably have weaker valve springs too

The only advantage of the DE top end is that they are marginally bigger cams.

If you were just looking to make it 'run', then all you need to do is put a DE exhaust manifold on there and match it up to the exhaust. On top of that you will need to run a pipe from the throttle body over to the air flow meter.

If you want it to not be a slug however, you will need to do something about upping the compression, installing larger cams and getting a remap to suit. Alternatively buying an entire S14/S15 SR20DE motor as they are already 10:1 as opposed to the DET 8.5:1. As mentioned before, the DE's also have larger cams

indeed u are right, the sr20de heads would obviously be weaker than sumthing built to support a turbo.. but as there wont be a turbo on the car, non sodium filled valves and the weaker head gear should be fine for his aplication

i actually kno 2 other cars using s14 sr20de high comp complete heads and running fine, without even the ecu change, but using a piggy back like e-manage blue.. and i think apexi neo to fine tune air/fule and some cam adjustments..

but without having to go threw all the tuning and other mumbo jumbo... u could get a complete sr20de vct head with loom and ecu and complete distributor cap as the DE's dont use coilpacks.. and probobly change ur afm aswell..

The head swap over wont change the compression of the engine, bar a very thick head gasket going in there too. Like TMB said, the only advantage is the slightly meatier cam profile. With the money saved from not buying the DE head, theres some cash towards some decent cams that will work when the turbo goes back on as well.

the heads all give the same compression.

The only benefit of changing to a DE head is that it'll come with n/a cams.

The biggest difference between turbo and n/a engines is the pistons, which are 8.5:1 in the DET, 9.5:1 in the S13 DE and 10:1 in the S14/15 DE.

Huh? I'm pretty bloody sure the DE in my N14 had the sodiums. The workshop manual said so! I'll be checking it again since I've still got it*. I'm really scraping my memory here, but I think the GA16 did not have sodiums.

Is it possible the N14s got a slightly uprated NA donk over the S13's then?

And for the hell of it, jus' chewin' the fat, I read that the sodium valves help with momentum too. The theory was that once the sodium melts, is sloshes from end to end, thereby adding force to the valve-closing at just the right time (until the revs go insanely over I guess) Comments?

Sodium filled valves don't make enough difference to worry about anyway.

The sodium valves have larger 7mm stems, (vs 6mm) so in theory they will restrict exhaust flow more and reduce performance :P
