... and they had turbo's, wastegate and associated lumps from JDM S15's, probably the JDM intercoolers and what-ever as well.

So the jap cars are good for 184kW stock, vs. 147kW out of the Aussies. I understand the jap turbo's are also the rollerbearing garrets, whereas the aussie turbo's are the older friction bearing garrets. Sounds like a reasonable part of a Stage 1, I thought.

Bloke at Unique autosports said, nahhh, the different turbo's only good for an extra 5kW maxxed out vs. the standard Aussie unit. He said there's a T28 variant that will give you a higher max if you do all the other necessaries.

The question: is the JDM turbo 'n attachments worth the effort or not? Throw in the probability that the spares price would be lower than new product, and maybe the answer is less clear too.

arnt the ball bearing jdm t28s ment to spool a lil quicker

if i was going from a t25 on a s13 id try and go the JDM turbo.

but for the price of the JDM unit comdapred to your adm, wouldnt be better to save a lil more and get something a tad bigger if your after power

No.

A Garrett GT28RS (aka. Disco Potato) is under $1300 delivered, brand new, and would be an excellent upgrade.

Upgrading from the oz-spec turbo to the jdm-spec turbo isn't worth the effort. Sure, if you had to pick between the two you would pay a little extra for the jdm, but if you already have the oz-spec then don't waste your time.
The guy at unique was right (which is unusual), that there is barely 5rwkw in it, but more probably there is 0rwkw difference between the two.
They have identical wheels and housings and the ball-bearing factor will be negligible when talking outright power.

I agree with the previous post - the gun turbo for 'stage 1' upgrade is the disco potato. You will find it as responsive as the oz-spec t28, but have a great deal more power potential
