Righteo then!

When my car is stopped facing downhill, water temp cools about 5-10 degrees. When its stopped facing up hill it heats up about 5 degrees.

Note: I have a skyline radiator, the top tank inlet is on the driver's side and I have 'S' shaped hosing to the other side (clearing fan shroud).

I'm thinking a couple of things:

1. Thermo??? Do you think my thermo is on its way out?
2. The 'S' shaped hose-do is flowing differently on different angles?

I know the weather is alittle hotter, but the temp change is really obvious. The 'S' shape has been there for a while and this temp thing is only recently which is leaing me towards the thermo being dodgy.

Ideas?

maybe becasue when your facing downhill, the liquid in the cooling system is all forced into the radiator, hence more of it gets cooled down?

i dunooooo

just a guess

How about combining the great taste of butterscotch schnapps and vanilla icecream in a blender and making kick arse alcoholic thickshakes?

But that wont solve your problem.....

For those who are wondering... I tried using the butterscotch schnapps and vanilla icecream in the radiator.... it didn't help.. tastes better than coolent though!

I don't think it would matter if the car was facing uphill/downhill/verticle in terms of flow, as it's a sealed system, it might make life easier on the pump if facing downhill, but the pump is related to RPM.

I rekon it would be the mannor in which the water/coolent is pumped through the radiator. Possibly the when facing downhill there is greater pressure in the radiator and more water/coolent is being cooled, or somthing like that.

I was thinking that it may be a faulty thermo as maybe with the engine downwards, it pushes the thermo open more?

is this temp drop instantanous or is after sitting for a while ?? Does the temp change the longer you sit ??

My thought would be that because of the amount of coolant in the radiator changing due to the angle it would change how much it gets cooled. For example when facing uphill there would be more air and less coolant in the radiator than if you were facing down hill, therefore less coolant would be getting cool and the engine temp would rise a little.

Its not a sudden drop or rise, but you can watch the gauge and within say 10-20 seconds its made the move.

The 'S' shape also does slightly sit higher than the actual radiator cap...

if the temp varies when you change angle it's likely you have an airlock in the system and are getting hot spots which you eliminate when the coolant level changes with the car sitting on an incline.

if the new radiator sits lower than the top of the head,or if the new hose or piping sits higher, you're going to have issues.

park the car on a level surface, and check it out again.

The radiator is better than the stock SR, otherwise I would have changed straight off the bat.

Totally on topic: Make sure you put in a teaspoon or two of vanilla malt powder in the thickshake for extra awesomeness...

As for the radiator thing, have you tried topping up the coolant with the car jacked up at the front?
