Post subject:  Mazda 626 turbo upgrade?

Posting this for a friend, who currently has a smoky turbo on his 1990 mazda 626, which is the same engine as the Mx6 turbo.
The mods are 3 inch turbo back exhaust, pod, medium size FMIC.
He plans to get an ECU, Injectors and fuel pump later down the track.

What would be the best option for a turbo upgrade? Are there any bigger turbos that would be bolt on with minimum difficulty?

Hopefully some of you guys might know abit about it because we are in the dark about it at the moment. thanks

There are no alternative bolt on turbos. Whatever you choose will be a custom job.

The standard turbo is very small, and basically lag free. I would say a good T28 would be a great replacement. Whilst they are a larger capacity engine the 12 valve head is quite asthmatic, so the T28 would be quite well sized. There is one for sale for $600 on here, a low k example at that too.

They are an IHI turbo, but use different flanges to any other car.

Would it be hard to get a adaptor plate made up to fit the T28 onto the standard exhaust manifold?

And is it much of a complex job to fit the T28, what needs to be done?

An adapter plate would be possible, a new dump pipe would also be needed... But the standard manifold isn't to crash hot, so it would probably be a good idea to get one made up to suit.

On the other hand.... tell him to rip out the F2t and drop an FE3 twin cam 2.0L motor in it, and turbo that!
