TURBO ID

To make a long story short , i have a red top sr20det never been boosted
no mods done to it . I have always been under the impression it had stock T25 fitted , i took car to mechanic and for service , went to collect today and he asked what turbo i had ? i said its just the stock t25 he told me it wasnt stock that it was difinately a ball bearing turbo (he said he could tell by the sound of it spooling up and the amount of power the engine had) i asked couldnt he tell by looking at it he said no the turbo is in a heat shield and could not see it . he said that some one has swapped the turbo for a ball bearing one and placed the heat shield back on to make it look stock.
on my way home i stopped in at another mechanic and asked him about it he took car for drive and came back and said the same thing its not stock turbo.
My question is first can you tell if its a ball bearing turbo by the sound ? (its quite loud and you can hear it spooling up very clearly)
second can you indentify the type of turbo by not removing the heat shield ? is this common for turbos to be upgraded and heat shield put back on ? also any suggestiosn of what type of turbo it may possibly be ?

No. It mat spool up faster than a plain bearing version of the same turbo,but you won't hear the difference coming on boost. Where you can occasionally hear it is when you switch the car off,and the ball bearing types keep spinning for a bit as they slow down.

No. You need to be able to read the cart numbers from off of the bearing housing.

Yes,if it's the same frame size as the original. Better under-bonnet heat control with it on,and less hassles from the police.

Not from here,no. If it's stronger than standard it's possible that it's an S14 or S15's standard turbo. They used to be a common swap for the T25G that the redtops came with from the factory when people killed them and wanted a cheap upgrade.

It'll be S15 if it's a factory nissan turbo. BB S14 turbos are a myth.

Could be a garrett replacement like a GT28 as well.

Although it's all guessing until you pull the covers off and have a look.

6 bolts between the core and turbine housing, and 466541 cart #

bush / plain / sleeve / wet floating / journal / hydrodynamic are names for the normal non BB type.

For the T28s that's usually a 466543 cart # from memory
