Cruises / Events - SilviaNSW Dyno Night - Sat 12th April 2008

Post subject: SilviaNSW Dyno Night - Sat 12th April 2008
This has been confirmed for Saturday 12th April 2008.

The venue and layout of the evening will be the same as our other dyno nights. It will be held at Unigroup Engineering, and the cost will be $40 for 3 power runs. You will get a printout of your best run. It will be starting at 4pm.

Air/fuel ratios, boost and knock will be monitored by Yavuz and the boys to ensure your engine doesn't get damaged. In the half dozen days i've organised there, not one engine has been hurt (and that has included some pretty dodgy setups!)

Anybody who has been to one of these events before will know that they are a great night to see what people have gained or lost from various mods on their cars, also to give people bragging rights.

We will be having a BBQ and selling softdrinks on the night as usual. $1.50 each item. We will also have Merchandise for sale

Its time for everyone to perform those modifications that you have been planning. There is plenty of time to get your shit sorted.

Dyno figures will he shown on the projector for all to see

The address is:

Unit 17
17a Amax Avenue
Girraween NSW, 2145.

This is the perfect opportunity to show how big your car's wang is. Time to put up or shut up!

Just a quick note for the guys that haven't been to one of our days before.

We don't run these things as a competition, even though it is fun seeing some big numbers. The main aim is for you guys to get your car on the dyno, especially if you haven't done it before, and make sure it's safe and maybe make a couple of tweaks on bleed valves or boost controllers to see what effect it has and whether it's still safe with those changes.

3 things will happen while your car is on the dyno that you won't necessarily get at other dyno days. 1) it will be properly strapped down, 2) it will have the a/f ratio monitored and 3) someone will be listening for knock.

We keep going back to unigroup because they look after the cars while they are on the dyno, and they have looked after a lot of club members over the years with dyno runs, tunes and general mechanical work.

You won't get laughed at if you aren't making much power

You will get laughed at if you claim you are making big power and don't back it up

In general, Silviansw people get first preference regardless if you just joined or not. Otherwise it will be up to my discretion whether you are allowed on.

This mainly applies to keeping bogan commodores and random garbage like that away from our days. Interesting machinery is welcome though, eg megapower stuff, or cool conversions.

we seem to have taken a turn for the worse. come on guys, is a 1.6NA vs 80's nugget 1.5 turbo all the challenges we are going to see.

Someone, anyone, throw down the gauntlet. Lets see some trash talking at the very least.

Unless you've all accepted that i'm going to wipe the floor with all of you again (yes an rb25 is good for something).

It might be. I'd challenge splashie to an rb vs sr 3071 duel but i don't know that his car will be running, or whether he'll change his mind again on what turbo to run....

I doubt that. it's down 400cc on an SR20 to begin with. it'll win most porn induction roar, but not power output. as I said before,I'm expecting 75 or so,and hoping for about 80kw atw.

if there aren't any hondas there it might win kw/cc.

my celsior came second for NA power last time I was at one of these with 144kw atw. it lost to a carby cleveland...

if they have a larger than stock rolling diametre, youll esentially be losing power there, also if they are heavier than stock. like my 19s, with them gone i should get about 20kg more power per wheel removed

put it on exactly how you drive it, then you know what youre regularly driving. people who put on the stock wheels, up the boost and do other stuff just the the dyno, just want a figure. if you want a figure of the car you drive. dont bother touching it.

Mate, where you place the o2 sensor won't affect power output. Maybe you're thinking of the air temp sensor, which is usually placed somewhere near your airbox/filters.

o2 sensor will only show if car is running rich or lean.

Eddie: read back a page or three in the thread. the prelude was turbocharged. not that you could hear it over the exhaust...

Funsiz: that little thing rocks. I've driven copens before back when I used to work for toyota. if you can squeeze yourself into one I doubt you'll get out again without a smile on your face.

Chindo: I have to agree with what anabolic just said. the dyno's o2 probe has nothing to do with the output of the car during the run. putting it into the exhaust up front is done for actual tuning where you want a more accurate reading than you need on a dyno night. on the latter it's only there as a safety check.
you made less power as yavuz doesn't put in high ramp rates and hang the intake temp sensor near the exhaust manifold to fudge up the numbers. what you got was an honest readout.

You have to admit its a funny little car and i'm sure if anyone was saying anything, it was more of a joke than anything. I wouldn't take offence

chindodood wrote:

You only get 220 on Unigroups dyno because thats all your car makes. Most other dyno operators in Sydney fudge the figures to make it look like your car makes more power after they work on them. Unigroup is one of the few that NEVER does that. Yavuz is as honest as they come

just talking about the specs of the car

Lucky fergo brought a toyota otherwise i would've scored the lowest power figure for the night

Was pretty unimpressed with the 108.8 from the autech, was expecting more with the pod filter and detached rear muffler, especially since i got 103.1 from an S14 motor with half a 3inch cat-back, pod filter and heaps of timing.

Was the dyno reading lower/more correct than last time? I heard it was recalibrated?

If anything i thought my number was a bit high,

seriously 3071, half throttle to hold around 16psi because the IW was rubbish, atleast 2 degrees timing short of where it should be.

No way it should have made 259

don't forget the copen

don't forget the NA S13 with massively lean mixtures that made all of 65kw or so. include that, and my girlfriend's car was third lowest for output, and second lowest for capacity on the night.
I reckon it did pretty well for an NA 1.6l.

it should have, but didn't. it helps when you inject the right amount of fuel into an SR. from the look of the runs he had,I'd guess he's up for a fuel pump.

and with the way fuel prices are going,we'll all be driving cars like the copen soon.

Yeah I just noticed that, what's the go? An Autech is supposedly rated at 147kW at the fly...but I guess if you had 30% drivetrain loss then your figure is spot on.

Weird...

stock s15's are also 147kw at the fly, and from memory they pull around 105-110rwkw stock

Actually fergo, one of those 180's never made over 200rwkw

You know who you are under-200rwkw-guy!

Actually I don't know if you were there later on when Yavus pointed out a interesting way of comparing things and adding a bit of parity, that shed a whole new light on the subject.

It's a fair bet that he'd be referring to the significant amount of head work zac had to have done to make the engine breath enough for a 300+ figure.

I've seen curves similar to zacs on rb20's with big turbos and a lot of head work. Bottom end response suffers as well as the initial bit of midrange, but once the thing gets where it needs to be power just goes vertical and you end up with a fairly high stable peak (within 30-40rwkw) power over a good 3-4k rpm so you have silly good average power in the 4-8k range. The setup is basically optimised for flow and power, not bottom end torque.

182go is banging on about his felt more responsive, i don't doubt it as he had the stock ports, cams and valves so improved gas velocity and better torque in the lower end of the rev range. He would have hit the same wall zac did a year or so ago when the engine wouldn't make more than 260-270rwkw.

Seeing as this is the dyno thread i have a few questions.

1. Whats kw @ the flywheel? Why is this higher then say kw @ the wheels.
2.Whats kw @ the wheel?
3. How is this all measured?

1. Lookup what a flywheel is. Usually, when you see a factory-rated power figure e.g. "The new Aurion with 200kw of power!!!", that figure is derived from the crankshaft or flywheel.

2. kW @ the wheels is a power measurement of the cars output literally from the wheels spinning rolling thingies on a dynamometer or 'dyno'. kW at the wheels is always lower than the factory rated power figures because on average cars lose 30% of their power from the engine through the drivetrain.

For example, a stock S15 has 147kW at the flywheel from factory. On the dyno, it will pull between 108-110kW.

You know I could have sworn that I had Tomei 270 / 12.5 intake and exhaust cams in there and I replaced the intake with a 260 / 12mm to try improve vacuum. I also thought that I had Tomei adjustable cam gears, Tomei springs and Tomei rocker stoppers in there.

I also was under the impression that Sam at Westend Performance ported the head and I port matched the intake. Man do I feel like a dope for spending 5k and winding up with a stock head

No the epiphany came when it was pointed out that I wasn’t comparing apples with apples.

Chris asked if I was impressed, to which I answered something like not overly (very few things impress me ever). If something is going to impress me it has to leave an impression that blows my mind not just go well.

For a bench mark I use a car I helped build the engine for, a 383 stroker that was running a tunnel ram style manifold, aftermarket ported alloy heads, massive solid cam, huge compression and running AV Gas. It ran a 10.02 on it’s first pass down the quarter and used to lift the passenger side front wheel about 10 inches off the ground on take off. When he stepped on it I could not literally pull myself out of the seat to grab the dash, using that as a bench mark most things come up short of what I would call impressive.

But as Yarvus pointed out that car was running a 4500 rpm stally so the revs flashed to those revs before attempting to move the car. If you launched Zac’s car at those same revs when it was on full boost it would feel damn impressive too. When I thought about it he was right you have to compare the exact same situation to get a fair and accurate comparison.

that's part of what the discussion was about. not comparing apples with apples.
and in defending your blase attitude in regard to Zac's car,you say that because a 383 stroker with lots of other work that had easily double the torque and triple the capacity was more impressive to drive than a worked 2l turbo car,you seriously feel that that is a fair yardstick to compare them by?
that's not apples and apples, that's a grape versus a watermelon.

if all that impresses you is 6L + capacity V8's,maybe you should stick to those.

If it make you feel any better I wasn't overly impressed with mine either. Yeah it made ok power, but honestly I really don't think there is much of a substitute for massive cubic inches when torque is involved. That sense of being pinned back in the seat has a huge rush on the senses.

Turbo cars can impress me because the Goblin did. I was suprised with how responsive it was and how well it stopped. Not the most powerful car I have been in, but it performed far better then I expected so that impressed me.

Besides as I said once I realigned my thinking, I think if you dumped Zac's at 4500rpm I definately think it would bring a smile to most peoples faces. Even the thought of it make me smile.
